Barons Overcome Adversity to Defeat Stockton Wolves

The Barons’ ultimate goal was accomplished, as they handily defeated the Stockton Wolves 58-22 Saturday night at the Reno Events Center.
“This has been our goal, and I’m really proud of these guys stepping it up with all the adversity and negative attention in the media,” Barons’ general manager Tim Pierce said.
Here is a rundown of the second half:
Stockton opened with a methodic drive that slowly chipped away at the Barons’ defense to make the score 20-22.
On the ensuing possession, Barons utilized Luke Lipincott a lot as a receiver, and running back Keithen Valentine helped him get yards after the catch with nice blocking.
Valentine took a direct snap on fourth down to save the drive and displayed tremendous power bursting through the defensive line, breaking through a tackle, and running for a 20-yard touchdown carrying two Stockton defenders on his back for at least ten yards. This put the Barons up 20-28 with six minutes left in the third quarter.
“Valentine is an outstanding ball player,” Pierce said. “He’s an NFL-ball player, and if he didn’t have surgery his senior year at Kansas State (University), he wouldn’t even be here so we’re lucky to have him”
On the following kickoff, Barons’ place kicker bulleted the ball directly into the chest of the closest Stockton player, and it bounced all the way back into the end zone where the Barons’ kicker fell on the ball. This somehow resulted in a safety for Stockton to make the score 22-28.
The Barons’ announcer said it was the oddest play he had ever seen in football.
The Wolves couldn’t capitalize though, as their new quarterback Lemue Adams lobbed up his fourth interception of the night under throwing a wide-open receiver. The amazing pick by Isaac Porter was his second diving and third (total) interception up to that point in the game.
“Isaac is a phenomenal ball player, and I’ve said that from the time I brought him in during September of last year,” Pierce said.
Barons took advantage of the pick with a hard-fought drive that ended in a short-touchdown pass to Lipincott (his second TD of the night). Barons added a two-point conversion on a pass to Valentine at the top-right corner of the end zone to make the score 22-36 with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Then the Barons successfully executed an onside kick allowing for a scoring drive capped off by another Valentine touchdown. On a direct snap, Valentine faked inside and went out to the right, broke one Stockton defender’s ankles cutting back inside and zig-zagged through two more defenders to make the score 22-43 with 5 minutes left in the game.
Pierce attributed the hard-nosed performance to the addition of James Terry at the head coaching position.
“We played way more physical, and that’s a reflection of our coach,” Pierce said. “With the coaching change, we’ve had an attitude adjustment.”
Barons then scored one point on an “uno,” as their placekicker made it through the uprights on the following kickoff to make the score 22-44.
The Wolves started their next drive on the goal line, but it was quickly ended with a chilling sack by Antoine Barlow that made the ball burst out of the Stockton quarterback’s hands. Rahkeem Smith scooped up the loose ball in the end zone to make it 51-22 with four minutes left in the game.
“We were way more physical this time around,” Pierce said. “We’re a whole different ball club, and we’ll knock you in the mouth.”
Isaac Porter grabbed his fourth and final interception of the night on the next possession to squeeze out any life that Stockton could have thought they had left.
The Barons further shattered Stockton’s morale ending the game with long bomb to Valentine streaking down the left side of the field with less than one minute left to make the final score 58-22.
Although Stockton got a reality check in Reno tonight, they have still won two-out-of-three contests.
“We’re not going to take our foot off the pedal,” Pierce said. “We let up a little this game but we’re not going to do that next week.”
Barons have a chance to even the score, as they face Stockton again next week on the road Saturday at 7:30 pm.
