TRENTON, N.J. - The Trenton Steel Indoor Football Team, in its first season, has qualified for the Southern Indoor Football League playoffs.
With Albany (9-1) defeating Richmond (4-6), 48-42, Saturday night, the Steel, which improved to 7-4 with their 78-53 win over Erie Thursday, nailed down at least the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. With the loss to the Panthers, Richmond at best can finish 6-6, while the Steel, even with a loss at Harrisburg June 11, will finish no worse than 7-5.
"It was a long way back from 0-3, but our guys kept their focus and kept working,'' said Steel head coach Rod Miller. "I'm very proud of them.''
The Steel still could finish first in the Northeast Division with a win over Harrisburg and a loss by Erie in one of its two final games. Even with that, Trenton will likely travel to either Columbus or Albany, Ga., the weekend of June 18. Both Georgia teams are 9-1 with two games left.
In the Eastern Conference, the two Georgia clubs will occupy the top two playoff seeds, with the Explosion and Steel either third or fourth.
